Gift Acceptance Policy (2025)

Wild Salmon Center’s (WSC) mission is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of wild salmon ecosystems across the Pacific Rim. Donations to WSC will be utilized to fulfill this mission and to support its core programs and special initiatives. WSC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

Our work would not be possible without the generosity of the donors and institutions that choose to invest in WSC’s initiatives. We gratefully accept financial support from individuals, foundations, corporations, government agencies, and partner organizations.

Wild Salmon Center accepts gifts that are consistent with our mission and core values. We reserve the right to examine or refuse donations that: a) violate the terms of WSC’s bylaws, b) would result in WSC losing its status as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, c) may create an administrative burden for the organization, d) is intended for purposes outside WSC’s mission, e) is offered by an entity that has engaged in racist or discriminatory practices, or f) is offered by an entity whose operations have caused unacceptable ecological harm in our program areas.

Decisions regarding the restrictive nature of a gift, and its acceptance or refusal, shall be made by WSC’s Executive Management Team. WSC reserves the right to decline or return donations deemed not to be in the best interest of WSC, to seek legal counsel in reviewing offered donations, and to make exceptions to the policy.

Wild Salmon Center generally accepts the following types of gifts:

  • Cash and cash equivalent gifts (made online or via credit card or check; remitted by wire transfer; or made directly from retirement accounts such as IRAs).
  • Gifts of stock and other marketable securities.
  • Gifts made through wills, charitable trusts, revocable living trusts, or through the designation of WSC as a beneficiary of retirement accounts or life insurance policies.
  • Grants directed from private foundations, family funds, living trusts, or Donor Advised Funds (DAFs).
  • Grants made by local, state, or federal agencies and public institutions.
  • Gifts of cryptocurrency, via a third-party tool.
  • In-kind gifts of services, gear, equipment, software, and other physical assets used in the operation of WSC, subject to staff determination of the applicability and condition of such services or equipment.

Wild Salmon Center does not typically accept the following types of gifts:

  • Gifts that are inconsistent with WSC’s mission, stated values, or discrimination policies.
  • Donations supporting work outside of WSC’s current initiatives, unless previously discussed and approved by WSC’s Executive Management Team.
  • Gifts made contingent upon a quid pro quo arrangement with the donor (e.g., the employment of the donor or their friends or family members at WSC).
  • Gifts of real estate, vehicles, boats, or other similar property, unless exceptions are made in advance by WSC. (Alternatively, donors holding a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) at an applicable community foundation may be able to donate such property to the foundation, contribute the property’s cash value to their DAF, and then regrant the value to WSC.)
  • Other gifts of tangible personal property that are not functionally related to WSC’s charitable purpose.
  • Gifts of cryptocurrency made directly to WSC without an intermediary.
  • Gifts and transactions potentially carrying any other conflicts of interest.

Restricted Gifts

It is the general policy of Wild Salmon Center that all gifts to the organization shall be presumed to be for general support purposes unless there is an explicit “restriction” of use. WSC strongly encourages donors to contact us proactively to discuss potential restrictions and earmarks for their gift, to ensure the donation can be directed according to their wishes. This allows donors and WSC staff the opportunity to discuss areas of greatest organizational need and potential usage, and to increase the likelihood that these gifts will have the maximum impact in achieving charitable purposes.
