WSC President Guido Rahr gave a TEDx talk* on the subject of “Salmon Strongholds” – the healthiest salmon ecosystems across the North Pacific. Salmon are a keystone species because they support scores of other wildlife including bears, eagles, and killer whales and are the lifeblood of Pacific Rim communities and economies. Despite the great benefits they provide, salmon populations have declined precipitously from their historic numbers. Wild Salmon Center is leading the Salmon Stronghold Initiative by investing resources into watersheds that support wild, diverse, and abundant populations to ensure the long-term survival of the species.

Stronghold conservation strategies
- Protect habitat at the watershed scale across the Pacific Rim to sustain wild salmon ecosystems for the long-term.
- Promote sustainable fisheries and management of wild salmon resources for long-term food and economic security.
- Build local capacity through support of stakeholder-led stewardship of salmon watersheds, such as local watershed councils.
*TEDx talks bring together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes or less).
