Pressed by counties and the timber industry, the Oregon Board of Forestry has voted to increase logging in state forests in the northwestern corner of the state.
Salmon populations of most species cannot sustain extreme catch rates for many years running, without suffering declines. Estimates suggest that some regions may be experiencing catch rates (including IUU fisheries) upwards of 90% of the total run.
Fish that spawn in the south and in the summer will die first as the world warms. Idaho’s high-elevation runs may offer one of the best chances the species has.
