Since its founding in 1978 by Mike Michalak and Brad Jackson, The Fly Shop has been committed to the health of wild fish and the rivers they call home. Each year TFS arranges trips for thousands of anglers to visit spectacular fly fishing destinations around the world – from Kamchatka to Alaska to Tierra del Fuego – through its network of top-notch guides, lodges, and outfitters.
Wild Salmon Center’s long-standing partnership with The Fly Shop began in the early 1990s, when WSC founder Pete Soverel teamed up with Michalak and TFS to explore new angling and research opportunities on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. Early on The Fly Shop recognized the need for proactive conservation in the Russian Far East, and the role anglers could play in supporting groups like WSC and Conservation Angler in building sustainable sport fishing, scientific research, and anti-poaching efforts in Kamchatka’s extraordinary salmon, steelhead and trout rivers.
Our goal is to do more to support partners like WSC in protecting healthy ecosystems, and to give our customers an opportunity to help safeguard the rivers they love.
Over the last 40 years, The Fly Shop never lost sight of its belief that their business is inextricably linked to successful conservation. That vision was formalized this year with TFS’ launch of the 2% for Trout program: a new partnership with WSC and other organizations working to safeguard important fisheries across the Pacific. Through 2% for Trout, WSC donors can identify themselves upon booking an international trip through The Fly Shop and have two percent of the cost donated back to conservation efforts.
“Our goal is to do more to support partners like WSC in protecting healthy ecosystems, and to give our customers an opportunity to help safeguard the rivers they love,” says Pat Pendergast, Director of International Travel at The Fly Shop. “Given the many threats to salmon and steelhead rivers today, it’s important for anglers and outfitters to be part of the solution—and this is an easy, no-cost way to achieve that.” Learn more at www.theflyshop.com.
